Gnaphosa occidentalis is Nationally Endangered (RDB1) and is something of a Cornish speciality. Until recently, the species was known from Britain only from Kynance Cove in 1922, and Cadgwith in 1935. However, specimens (which I have seen) were discovered at Penhale near Newquay in June 2004. It is likely to turn up in more localities once systematic recording of spiders in Cornwall takes place.
