Steatoda bipunctata is a common inhabitant of houses and outbuildings throughout Wales, Scotland, and most of England - except Cornwall! In fact there are no records at all in the Provisional Atlas of Spiders (Harvey et al. 2002). However, while on holiday in Bojewyan near St. Just in September 2004, I found a female specimen of this species in a web in an under stairs cupboard within a couple of hours of our arrival (we did not bring it with us from Reading!). Judging from the Visitors' Book, the people who had stayed there came from all over England where Steatoda bipunctata is common. Thus it could have hitched a ride with one of these families in their luggage. However, there seems no good reason why the species should be so rare. The ERCCIS record from 1995 is from a house in Redruth. Steatoda bipunctata must surely be present in many more houses in the County.
