The three literature records for the intertidal Anuridella calcarata all date from the 1930s. Lawrence & Goto (1968) considered that Anuridella immsiana and Anuridella submarina (both described by Bagnall) were junior synonyms of Anurida calcarata. However according to Fjellberg (1998) 'Available material indicates that submarina is a different, more northern species than calcarata'. Having examined Bagnall's material in the NHML collection, I would agree with Fjellberg's conclusions that both Anurida immsiana and Anurida submarina are good species. Nevertheless, it is possible that Anurida calcarata Denis 1925 could be present on the South Coast of England or Ireland. The presence of sensillum E on ant4 (see Fjellberg 1998 Fig. 61) appears to be a defining character for Anurida calcarata. In the specimens of Anurida immsiana and Anurida submarina from UK/Eire that I have seen (in which the antennae are well-preserved), sensillum E is absent from ant4.
