Cryptopygus sphagneticolus is not included in the Isotomidae monograph of Potapov (2001) and there is some doubt as to the identity of the specimens found by Bagnall (1939) in Scotland ('3000 feet on Ben More, near Crianlarich'), and those listed in the Irish checklist by Bolger (1986). Fjellberg (personal communication) has suggested that Cryptopygus sphagneticolus (which Bagnall said was blind) may be the same as Isotoma ekmani which has 1+1 ocelli. These ocelli are small and difficult to see and, together with other features, could have been missed by Bagnall. There are no specimens in the NHML slide collection. It is probably best to tentatively retain 'sphagneticolus' on the checklist pending re-sampling at the localities on the map.
